Part of the process to open a sportsbook entails a lot of research, especially about the industry. If you want to be able to succeed as a bookie, you need to know every single thing you can about gambling and sports betting. One of the best ways to do this is to keep track of the various betting markets across the country. It will help you know the latest trends in sports betting, as well as emerging betting markets and potential customer bases you can tap. Today, we are taking a look at the North Carolina online sports betting bill, and where it is now.
Fortunately for residents of North Carolina, the wait will not be as long as online sports betting in Texas. House Bill 347, which will legalize online wagering in the state, passes its third reading in the Senate with a vote of 37-11. The bill, originating from the House of Representatives, has had a few changes as it went through the Senate. Because of these changes, the bill will go back to the House for approval.
The North Carolina Online Sports Bill and What it Contains
The state already offers retail sports betting in three tribal casinos, so the language of the bill is not unfamiliar with legislators. But legalizing online wagering allows for a larger betting market for the state, given how convenient online sportsbooks are, and how easy it is to use them. You can even easily put up your own online sportsbook, thanks to sportsbook pay per head providers.
One of the bill’s changes is its evolution from an online wagering bill to also allow retail betting at or near professional sports venues, as well as pari-mutuel betting on horse racing. Once both the House and the Senate agree on the terms of the bill, it will then go to the office of Governor Roy Cooper. The Governor has previously stated that he will pass the law. Should everything go according to plan, we can see online sports betting go live as early as January 8, 2024. That gives sportsbooks ample time to prepare for Super Bowl betting for the next season.
