What's Your Opinion on the SAFE Bet Act

The bill, presented by Senator Richard Blumenthal and Representative Paul Tonko, seeks to address some perceived issues with the rapidly growing sports betting business in the United States, which is present in 38 states plus DC.

Several sections of the SAFE Bet Act limit the time that sportsbooks may run ads between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. and during certain live sporting events. Two other common types of sports betting are outlawed: betting on specific college players and in-game betting during professional and collegiate league games.

Are you in favor of the bill? I hope it doesn't pass because removing prop betting and in-game betting will impact sportsbooks.

I think legally there is a problem since this is a federal bill/proposal. And the PASPA repeal back in 2018 was very specific in passing gaming-related matters to the jurisdiction of each state. There have been previous attempts at federal bills on gambling and sports betting and none of them have gotten much support. I reckon this will suffer the same fate those other bills had. If they want this to happen, they are better off talking to their colleagues from their home states and asking them to pass for state legislation instead.

Aside from running my own online sportsbook, I do enjoy traveling since my bookie pay per head solutions is helping me get my work done easily.

Taking prop bets and in game betting just gives people more incentive to go for offshore sportsbooks. I doubt this bill will get far as they will get pushbacks from operators themselves.

I appreciate all of the help I can get as I work my way to run a long-term and successful business. From the day that I learned how to open a sportsbook to now, there is definitely a lot I now know from experience. It does not mean I will stop learning, though.

I think it they just focused on advertisements, they would have a higher chance of passing. But meddling in what products sportsbooks can offer will be a hard pass. It would pose conflict with existing laws of states that already offer sports betting.

The two lawmakers are trying to convince their colleagues that the bill would address the public health implications of sports betting in the US. In addition to banning ads and prop bets, the lawmakers want to ban the use of AI to monitor players' gambling habits.
